Hood Green Compost plans dramatically pulled. PDF Print E-mail

The latest application for a composting facility between Hood Green and Gilroyd was due to be decide by the planning commitee on 16th December.  This was dramatically pulled at the last minute by the Communities and Local Government minister Margaret Beckett. The minister has demanded that the application not be determinied without special authorisation from her department.

Eric Danforth, from Saville Hall Farm, has applied to build the composting facility that would take Green waste from the council.  The plans were set for approval by the planning department, so its a victory for the Campaigners in Stainbrough and Hood Green who have submitted over 700 Letters of objection to the plan.

Barnsley West and Penistone MP , Mick Clapham has raised concerns over the plans  and the conflict of interest.

Conservative Councillor Robert Barnard, from the Penistone East ward agrees with the Labour MP and is quoted as saying "There is at least a perception and perhaps a reality, of a conflict of interest in that Barnsley Council would be the sole user if permission was granted"

Councillor Emma Wright, from Stainborough Parish Council, was delighted "Its good news for us" she said.  Stainborough Parish Council have campaigned against the facility for many years.  She also added " It seems the Government is concerned otherwise they would have waited until after the decision"

The residents main areas of concern as I understand are

  • The impact in Green belt
  • The Traffic to and from the site along narrow roads
  • The fungal spores emitted from decaying matter, and their effect of the health of those residents exposed.
