Open day at Local Nature Reserve, Potter Holes Plantation, Tankersley.
Wondering what to do with the children during the summer holidays? Needing something that appeals to all members of the family? Interested in finding out more about our local woodlands and their resident wildlife? Fancy a walk or cycle to one of our local beauty spots? Well, this event is aimed at you.
In celebration of our local wildlife and precious natural greenspaces and to promote the current United Nations’ declared ‘International Year of Biodiversity’, Tankersley & Pilley Environment Group, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council’s Parks Services and Steel Valley Project have collaborated to provide an enjoyable day out. They have planned a range of exciting events to appeal to the general public to take place at one of our Local Nature Reserves.
This free event will include a covered area where children can participate in craft activities with an environmental and wildlife theme. There will be displays on wildlife information and woodland industries and a guided walk around the trails within the woodland that contains trees dating back to 1841 and is obviously steeped in industrial history. There is also an opportunity to participate with the practical conservation work-group in cutting back invasive plants to help ensure its continued conservation value.
The walks, hosted by members of the local environment group will explore the visible history of the site where the old ‘bell pits’ from the past ironstone mining industry are still obvious along with investigating the natural flora and fauna that find home here and contribute to its status as one of Barnsley’s official Local Nature Reserves.
Potter Holes Plantation is easy to find as it is situated along the A61, near to junction 36 on the M1. It is also located near to the ‘Timberland’ section of The Trans-pennine Trail and has a 2 hourly bus service that runs nearby. Please note that there is limited parking on Westwood New Road, Tankersley. The fun starts at 1.30pm for 2 hours on Friday 20th August and continues from 6pm until 7.30pm – this will mainly operate from the area near to the Westwood New Road entrance, adjacent to Rose Cottage. Activities will be programmed to work around wet or hot weather, so get your walking shoes on and prepare for a quality day out!
This event has been kindly supported by the ‘East Peak Innovation Partnership’ that currently runs throughout the area aimed at enhancing rural development through community led projects and the Barnsley Council’s Community Support Fund aimed at supporting community action.
