One sunny day last June children from St Peter’s Primary School joined the police on Westwood New Road to carry out a speeding check. The kids looked as though they were enjoying it, the people who were stopped obviously didn’t and the police were amazed at the results.
During the one and a quarter hour operation between one fifteen and three o’clock, twenty-four cars passed. Twenty-one were speeding at over thirty miles per hour, six of them were travelling at over forty miles per hour and the fastest was doing forty-four miles per hour – there were some very red faces when the children confronted them. On this occasion none of the culprits was prosecuted.
The police were so concerned that on August 10 they carried out another exercise, this time without the children. Between twelve noon and one thirty fifteen cars were found to be speeding, ten at over the thirty limit and two at over forty. This time there were penalties!
Since these operations, signs have been erected which show the speed of passing vehicles – so you know exactly what you’re doing and the police could be back!
